My name is Carly Andrews. I am a young, passionate and creative costume professional who is currently employed at Carlo Manzi Ltd, however, I am looking to make my way back into the world of costume making.
I hold two arts degrees in fashion and costume and have recently completed a historical pattern making course with Sharon McCormack, held by Creative Media Skills. This course has made it clear to me that my true passion lies in the creation of costumes.
I have experience free-lancing as a costume maker for Jane Law – here I learnt an incredible amount about the art of costume making. I was able to enhance my sewing skills, further my knowledge of period costume pieces and gain an insight into the costume industry. I loved the experience of working in a studio as part of a dynamic team. It was here I was exposed to an exceptionally high standard of work, where attention to detail is everything. The thrill that came with working on live projects in a fast-paced environment with ever-changing deadlines was exciting and incredibly rewarding.
Through my more recent employment, I have developed an appreciation for the accurate historical portrayal of period costume in film, television and theatre. At the Arts University Bournemouth I was given the opportunity to specialise in both making costumes as well as supervising productions which were directed by industry professionals. I consider supervision to be a valuable skill as it has made my organisational skills one of my greatest assets – something which I believe to be most beneficial in the costume industry. I am also confident in hand and machine sewing (domestic & industrial).
I am motivated, hardworking and dedicated to completing everything to the best of my ability. I have excellent time management skills and always ensure that my work priorities are well organised. I also believe that a positive approach can make any task more achievable.
