I started the Stitch Society in 2015 after identifying a need for smart, practical, sustainable workwear and began by using fabrics saved from the mills around Bradford when they closed in the 1990's.
Based in Yorkshire, we have been working with several small manufacturers to create a network to facilitate the growing need from designers, start-ups, and small independents for small sustainable production runs following a growing number of enquiries.
Such a shift in mindset does require education and, using contacts and experience of working with UKFT (the UK Fashion & Textile Association), Make It British and the Crafts Council, we plan to work with businesses, schools and colleges, individuals, and community groups to deliver training programmes, planning, sustainable sourcing, and manufacturing in the UK, and the perils of fast fashion.
The Stitch Society has grown organically over the last 5 years, staying true to our ethos of sustainability, ethical sourcing, and UK manufacture, combined with a generosity of spirit and openness.
In November 2022, the business moved into a larger space in Bradford in the heart of Yorkshires' Textile Heritage, which facilitated growth in our production capacity and increasing B2B offering.
My love of textiles drives my work and my business. Having studied Textile Marketing at Huddersfield University and worked for Freemans Grattan, inspiration and education have always been important to me as passing on skills and sharing my knowledge has become part of my business practice, inspiring those around me to develop their ideas sustainably and ethically as possible.
