Hello! My name is Charmaine and I am a freelance artist and designer, specialising in oil paintings and interior design. I have a bachelor's degree in French Literature with Film Studies from King's College London, as well as a Certificate in Residential Interior Design from KLC School of Design.
I have been producing, taking on commissions and selling art for two years and have recently made the decision to go full time as a freelance artist. I have worked on private portraiture commissions, as well as for a London theatre as their commissioned artist. I am currently working towards my first exhibition entitled "Drag".
As well as working as an artist, I have been pursuing interior design and interior design consultancy. I have worked on a commercial project, producing 3D renders for a leisure centre, as well as a freelance residential interior design consultancy job. I have done an internship for London Home Staging, which really showed me how to dress a space, specific to a client. With all of this, I am energetic to forge a career in the art and design industry, open to any freelance interior design/stylist and art roles.

Deciding to study here was very serious for me; I had just graduated and was in so much debt and was confused what I should do to start my new, free, adult life! The last thing I wanted to do was move back up to sunny Stoke-on-Trent. I've always been interested in interiors (in fact now it seems silly I didn't think about it sooner) and after doing a very theory based degree, I really wanted to learn vocational skills, something I could physically take into the real world. Despite so many risks, this was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Studying here part time (and working on the side) has been very difficult in terms of finding the time to visit showrooms and grand Victorian houses. But I have learnt so much, both stylistically and practically. I've experienced lectures from some of the top names in the Interior world (Joa Studholme who creates all the F&B colours!!), as well as lectures from an array of workmen and women. I have had the freedom to explore my own personal style, whilst always keeping to a brief. I've honed in on my moodboard, analysing a brief, sourcing, designing, presenting, AutoCAD and Sketchup, technical drawing, perspective drawing and styling skills (to name but a few). This course has been intense but I am so happy to see my work develop. Our final project will be for a real life client, designing their bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and dining room. Although Interior design has obviously been the focus, doing this course has opened my eyes to many other career paths and I can't wait to start!
BA(Hons) French with Film StudiesKing's College London

Although far from my current aspirations, I am very happy I did this degree at a university in London. It really brought alive my love of French Literature and Art and living in France for a year was an experience I'd never forget. Studying Film Studies along side this was, although seemingly meaningless back then, a critical step in my love for design. Despite being very theory based, Film Studies was the first time I was taught how to read a space, how framing/colour/editing etc impacts a viewer and manipulates emotions within them. It wasn't until in hindsight that I realised these skills were vital to all forms of art. Interior design, styling, painting, singing etc are all means to instill a feeling into the viewer/audience. This skill of understanding an audience/viewer/buyer is something I feel I have been practising my whole life and it one of the most intrinsic aspects of humanity. Some may say this is way too deep (and up its own a***) and using this skill as a means of advertisement and selling a product is manipulating an audience, however I think everyone is drawn to beautiful things and everyone wants these things in their life, whether it's a painting, a house, music, film, a quirky new lampshade from Oliver Bonas...
