- Maddslinky“At that time I could never have imagined that I could make anything commercial” says Zed Bias speaking under his alias Maddslinky about the classic UK Garage anthem ‘Neighbourhood’. We’re supposed to be talking about Make A Change, his latest album out on Tru Thoughts, but while I’ve got him on the phone for a short while, I couldn’t resist asking him about the massive club banger. Those who remember will recall that ‘Neighbourhood’ was accompanied by an Andy Hylton video showing scenes from th
- Ty Showcase and Q&AThe British Music Experience played host to UK rapper Ty’s album showcase and Q&A for his fourth album A Special Kind Of Fool. On paper, everything about this set up made marketing sense. You had the great location, a great artist and fans were given the opportunity to get up close and personal to ask Ty anything they wanted. If you weren’t one of the lucky few in attendance, the event was streamed live and you could tweet your questions. It definitely was a night well planned, that is until we
- Donae'o“Do you want something to eat?” says the voice saved as “D” on my phone. It’s Donae’o and he’s 45 minutes early for his interview. I say no and proceed to rush quickly to our meeting point, the lovely surroundings of The Roundhouse Café. I was intrigued. Most people would have a major tantrum, but not Russell. “It’s all right if you smash it, as long as you don’t smash it on a rock or something”. (Laughs) “It’s not a good look”. Like many singers, Brighton-born Russell grew up singing in the church choir, which coincidently was the setting we found ourselves in; the Union Chapel to be precise, where sh
- AkalaHe’s intrigued us with the promo video for XXL and whet appetites on his F64, now after three years Akala is back with his third album DoubleThink. Ever the socially conscious individual, Akala’s taken inspiration from dystopian novels as well as artists as diverse as Public Enemy and Rage Against The Machine to bring us a truly genre-defying album. Joining forces once again with producer Reza Safinia, a collaboration that previously gave us hip-hop classics It’s Not A Rumour and Freedom Lasso,
