- "How The Girlfriend Experience Feeds Our Inner Girl Boss" - Branded Content, STARZ We’re in love with the fearless vibe of STARZ’s show, The Girlfriend Experience. After season one was a critical smash hit, the writers have bravely dived into a never-before-seen format for season two, exploring the complexities of sex work in the USA today. It’s got powerful politics, serious eroticism, and cut-throat corruption, leaving us totally exhausted and totally thrilled. The Girlfriend Experience carries some serious Girl Boss inspo – here’s why. Women’s desire is valid, not deviant. This show has it all: LGBT-friendly sex scenes, polyamory, sub-dom relationships, and more. Sex is frequent, super-sexy, and shows different exchanges of power and control without being ‘freaky’. We love the way the show’s characters are unapologetic about their kinks and cravings – after all, we’re all human. Working women are powerful. Whether it’s earning $$$ or rocking an incredible two-piece suit, these women are a force to fear. Like the compulsive watching of Orange is the New Black, The Girlfriend Experience is headed by an outstanding female line-up and shows us how women can redress the power balance by standing strong. The show boasts some bad-ass female members of their production team, including co-writer Amy Seimetz and Moonlight producer Adele Romanski. Seimetz is responsible for Bria’s storyline, a complicated tale of a domestic violence survivor who’s sense of identity and comfort is inextricably tied to her escort work. It’s unapologetic. The women of The Girlfriend Experience go for what they want and aim to shape their own future. Whether that’s using money, sex, power, or something else – we hope this signals the beginning of the end for one-dimensional portrayals of female characters as either agreeable mothers or soulless sex kittens. Sex work isn’t moralised. Each episode of the show appears in two half-hour sections, both following totally different characters and storylines. This ground-breaking format isn’t just crazy watchable (we’re so sick of hour-plus single episodes) but highlights the complicated reality of sex work. Some women choose it and love it – some suffer under off-kilter power dynamics. Whatever your views, we can all agree that no two sex workers are the same. You can sign up for a totally free STARZ trial right now, plus you can use the app as well as the website to watch on any device. The whole of season one is available to watch today, and season two will be released throughout November and December. Get watching.
