Hi There, My name is Conor Carroll and am a playwright. Now, before this starts sounding like an AA meeting for artists, what's say I move swiftly on to tell you a bit about me? Sounds good, right? I am a recent graduate student of the MA Writing for Stage and Broadcast Media from the Central School of Speech and Drama who has experience of writing for both mediums but has recently specialised in telling stories through participatory performance with my own theatre company, REC Theatre. I possess a varied acting experience having performed in over a dozen productions as part of the Queen Mary Theatre Company from 2009 -2012, one of which was taken to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2011. Shortly after this I came to my senses and made a career turn. In the summer of 2011 I tried my hand at playwriting and in February 2012 this resulted in my directing debut with the Queen Mary Theatre Company and my own piece of writing "Away With Women". Following this adventure I was approached by a fellow member of the QMTC to co-write a short film. I agreed to this and I spent the summer of 2012 producing and acting in that very film. It is called "Much Fuss" and a number of materials, including two trailers and various set photos can be found in my portfolio. The film was released in June 2013 and the full feature can be found in my portfolio. Upon graduating from university I reached out to a few like-minded students at Queen Mary and asked if they would be interested in forming a theatre company to which they luckily agreed. Our company is called REC theatre and we specialise in participatory theatre which utilises naturalistic performances to tell immersive audience orientated stories in a non-naturalistic fashion. In February 2013 we produced our first independent production, "Shock" written and directed by myself for a two night run. From January to March 2013 I took part in the National Theatre Young Studio Season 2. As a group our goal was to experiment with different ways of recreating real urban spaces, such as Waterloo station, within a performative setting ultimately resulting in a sharing which was viewed by several members of the NT Learning Department and the NT Studio team. Following on from this I was involved with Season 4 of the National Theatre Young Studio, entitled "The Shape of the Impossible". This project was comprised of several previous Young Studio Alumni working together with established Theatre/Opera director Max Webster, writer Sonia Hughes and choreographer Frauke Requardt to devise a piece which was ultimately performed in The Shed, at the National Theatre, on Monday 19th of August 2013. My writing for London stages includes the LOST Theatre's One Act Festival and Theatre503's Rapid Write Response.
Brought in over the summer months to increase recruitment rates for young people joining their new Foundation Acting Course and term time evening classes. Responsibilities included: • Assisting with the writing and distribution of press releases to local newspapers and magazines • Devising the social media campaign and scheduling the release of information through our various platforms, delegating roles based on the staff available. • Handling the creation and distribution of promotional materials, including flyers and posters. • Liaising with local schools and parents to encourage them to send their kids to our classes. • Promoting the brand of YATI and being the voice behind our social media campaign, checking on a daily basis how our young people are engaging with our building.
