About me
Hi, I’m Danny Jones; a graphic designer, creative thinker and problem solver currently based in The New Forest. I recently graduated from Southampton Solent University with a BA Hons in Graphic Design. Before that, I studied a UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Graphic Design at Reading College. The areas of design I specialise in are corporate identity design, editorial design and wayfinding design. However, I’m not limited to these disciplines. While focusing on these disciplines individually I also like bringing them together in projects where possible. I take a big interest in typographic design and how type is treated in a project. Although graphic design is my main passion I also take an interest in photography, especially film - you’ll often see me with my Olympus OM10 taking pictures of architecture. This being something else I’m interest in, particularly Art Nouveau and Brutalist architecture; quite the contrast, I know. If someone were to ask me what is something I would love to design I may say, a set of stamps, a bank statement or all the ephemera for a mid-1900’s block buster film. My peers and tutors often used the words “very corporate” and “slick” when describing my work. I find myself being drawn to a more corporate aesthetic with my work although, I do enjoy exploring my own creativity to see what I can come up with. I enjoy working on big and small projects, each offer their own challenges and rewards. I enjoy the ‘nuts and bolts’ jobs - creating brand guidelines, grid systems and finding the optimal point size of type are things I would consider as ‘nuts and bolts’ jobs. I’m very inspired by the work of 8vo, in particular their typographic journal Octavo. Otl Aicher, Michael Bierut, Wim Crouwel and Josef Müller-Brockmann being other names that spring to mind when I think about personal inspirations.
Projects
  • Designer vs Printer
Designer vs PrinterThis little newspaper design took a playful approach to the sometimes volatile relationship between Graphic Designers and Printers. I approached this project with an open mind and no preconceptions allowing me to create a graphic style which showed the good and bad side of both parties. This was a brief set by the B.A.M London which I was lucky enough to win an internship with.
  • My Waffles
My WafflesVans is steeped in history with their iconic shoe models in the street wear and skateboarding scene. Uniting their larger audience as one family. I created this editorial piece and using interviews I collected from fellow Vans enthusiasts from different subcultures, I was able to explore how they come together as one family. Using my own photography I put together a small zine displaying these interviews and created a graphic style that reflects the changing style of Vans and their target audie
  • Scout
ScoutScout is a bicycle hire scheme based out of Southampton with the aim of expanding to more cities across the UK. Using the brand identity of the bicycle scheme and the beauty of the city it's in Scout aims to inspire the public to explore their city using Scout. Scouts brand identity relies heavily on elements from the city the scheme is in. This identity adapts to the city it's in while keeping a clear graphic language across the whole brand.

B.A.M London set a live brief during my second year at University. I was fortunate enough to win a competition they had set and was granted the opportunity to intern at B.A.M London for a week during the summer of 19’. During my internship at B.A.M I worked closely along side the design team working on a number of print publications, some being The Times Luxx and a catalogue for Christie’s Auction House. My tasks at B.A.M were given to me each morning and usually consisted of me laying out page designs ready to be checked over by the more senior designers. I would be given a selection of images to use, the body copy and some style scapes. I was then given the freedom to design page layouts they would fit with the rest of the publication. I learnt how to explore my own creative directions while still keeping in tune with a somewhat rigorous style.

     - Twyford, Reading, United KingdomInternship
During many of my academic breaks I often did work experience in a design studio based in Twyford, Reading. I was given the freedom to work on many small tasks ranging from designing small advertisements for estate agents to business cards for small businesses. Working on my own for the majority of my time at the studio I learnt how to manage myself, be independent and think for myself. One key thing I took away from my time at Design Directions was presenting my work, I reported directly to the art director and presented my ideas for each project I worked on. Doing this helped build confidence and my ability to sell an idea.
