Darren Black is a London-based fashion & advertising photographer who’s work hits 4 key notes, sex, subversion, vulgar, cool.
An early adopter of trends and the zeitgeist, his approach is that of an artist rather than fashion photographer. A lecturer at London College of Fashion, Sheffield Hallam and Ravensbourne University, Darren teaches as a practitioner & has nurtured some great new creatives in the fashion industry.
Darren’s last exhibition: create/destroy/create - an experiment in collage, saw him rifle through his archive using both rudimentary and brand-spanking new technology to deconstruct his own archive of work and create bastard portraits that are drenched in sex and elicit more than a touch of the violence of his method. The resulting work was an arresting (and at time shocking) comment on the nature of photography and the airbrushed, retouched world we live in.
A resident of London for the last 20 years, Darren has witnessed the gentrification of certain areas, in some cases completely fracturing the families that live in them. A massive fan of Brutalist Architecture, Darren has seen stunning buildings that are perfectly usable knocked down in order to build newer shinier ones that largely go uninhabited in the name of progress. What started out as a personal project, has now developed into a passion - Darren is aiming to go on a photographic walkabout in London, documenting the unlisted Brutalist buildings before they are destroyed.
