Five years ago, I worked at an African film production company my parents developed since 2003. I completed a film making voluntary work experience over a period of four months from April 2014 to August 2014. They were extremely long hours over weekends and weekends and was agreed to be an unpaid. I embarked on this opportunity during a gap year I took during my college years and worked under the roles of as an assistant director, screenwriter and actor. AD (Assistant director) work involved assisting the director physically and emotionally with production. I worked closely with the production manager and ensured equipment, materials and the needs of the cast and crew were supervised and reported back to the director. Screenwriting relied upon quick, witty and literary skills since the director had only first drafts of written scripts during production. I had to rewrite dialogue during takes and before takes and on rare occasions the director (who was my father) and I had to feed the lines to actors since they had less time to rehearse and memorise. We knew dialogue had to be edited during pre-take rehearsals when actors improvised greater expressive words. Acting was dynamic and but most importantly required listening skills from other cast members and most importantly the director. I played a character that I had previously performed before, which was the ‘rebellious teenager’. Organisation, transcribing, listening and the ability to be dynamic are skills which I learned from Assistant directing, screenwriting and acting which I can apply to the Women in British Film internship.

I’m currently enrolled as a third-year undergraduate BA Film studies student at the University of Exeter and volunteer at the famous Bill Douglas museum. After nearly three years of Film Studies I've taken the following modules: Introduction to Film Art, Introduction to Film History, Major Debates in Film Theory, Transnational Cinemas, Cinescapes (Film Philosophy), Shots in the Dark, Romanticism, Adaptation, British Screens, War & Visual media and now currently taken a module in African Narratives and a Creative Film Dissertation module. Each of these modules have influenced my skill in film making as an art form in different ways with reference to form, creativity and style.
