BA Hons Linguistics (First Class) Linguistics is the study of language and includes a broad range of fields including syntax, semantics, psycholinguistics, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, computational linguistics, phonetics and more. Studying language in a detailed and focused manner equipped me with analytical skills and an eye for detail, especially when interpreting data and research in order to formulate arguments about intellectual issues, and when examining linguistic systems and identifying the principles and patterns which govern them. Written and spoken communication skills were also essential, for example during supervisions with academics where ideas on linguistic topics are shared, debated and challenged, and in essays where arguments must be formulated clearly and convincingly, and with sufficient evidence from thorough research. Studying communication itself also gave me an advanced understanding of grammar and enabled me to appreciate the subtleties of spoken and written communication, identifying often hidden and multiple meanings and why they arise. I understand how people use words to connect with others and how communication can be optimised for different goals, be it clarity, engagement, politeness or identity. During my degree I developed skills in time management and prioritisation, taking a proactive approach to my work. Completing a 10,000-word dissertation (in which I received First Class) in my final year alongside multiple essay and assignment deadlines per week as well as responsibilities as part of the Jesus May Ball Committee required self-motivation and balancing a heavy workload effectively.

Latin (A*): The study of Latin required an analytical and logical approach to unseen translations. Applying vocabulary knowledge to texts from political and historical sources such as Cicero and Livy whilst deciphering grammatical relationships was challenging, developing my eye for detail and encouraging a methodological approach to tasks. Analysing poetic and literary texts from Ovid and Virgil required a creative mindset to understand the techniques being used and their effect on the reader, as well as clear and coherent style of writing to convey arguments in exams. Mathematics (A): Problem-solving skills were essential for Mathematics A-level. A good understanding of core principles in areas such as trigonometry, calculus, statistics and mechanics provided the basis on which I exercised my problem-solving skills, and an eye for detail and logical thinking enabled me to produce accurate solutions for complex questions. English Language (A): English Language developed my understanding of the key aspects of the study of language, such as grammar, history, acquisition and sociolinguistics. I also gained skills in written communication as we learned to adapt our styles of writing for different purposes, such as opinion articles, requiring a persuasive and engaging voice, and comparative and discursive essays which required laying out coherent and convincing arguments with a focus on linguistic data.
