Originally from Worcestershire, UK, Emily May is a Berlin-based arts writer specialising in dance reporting and criticism. Since graduating from Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London with a First Class degree in Contemporary Dance, Emily has worked for and contributed to a variety of publications across Europe and America including Flash Art—contributing regularly to their Dance Office column—Dance Magazine, SLEEK, Vogue Germany, and Springback Magazine, a contemporary dance platform run by Aerowaves and edited by Guardian dance critic Sanjoy Roy. She is currently an Editor at Freunde von Freunden magazine in Berlin. Alongside writing, Emily is experienced in hosting post-show talks and dance-related panel discussions in person and via Zoom. She conducted live-streamed interviews with choreographers and performers for the digital editions of Aerowaves Springforward 2020 and Soundance Festival Berlin during coronavirus lockdown. Emily’s writing is informed by her own practical experiences in the dance industry. As a choreographer, Emily has presented her own work at venues including Somerville College Oxford, The Ashmolean Museum, and The Brewery Arts Centre, as well as in academic contexts for symposiums at Royal Holloway University (organised by the Society for Dance Research) and The University of Vienna. She was mentored by choreographer Rosie Kay, which led to her performing on moving steam trains in Kay's The Great Train Dance, dancing in an R&D week for the company’s work Fantasia, and serving on Rosie Kay Dance Company's Board of Directors from 2016 to 2020.

Dance WriterSpringback Magazine
In April 2019 I was selected as one of ten dance writers from across Europe to take part in Aerowaves Springback Academy, a scheme which offers a unique chance for emerging dance writers to be mentored by professional critics (Kelly Apter, Laura Capelle, Sanjoy Roy, and Donald Hutera) during an international festival hosted in Paris. Upon completion of the scheme, I was invited to be a writer the complimentary publication Springback Magazine, contributing dance-related interviews and reviews from my current Berlin-base. I have also been involved in various other projects organised by Aerowaves, such as Springback Exploratorium, a week-long investigation into methods for audience engagement which ran alongside B.Motion Festival in Bassano Del Grappa, Italy.
