At Verve my main area of focus is the design and development of emails, surveys, micro-sites and responsive community panels sites (desktop and/or mobiles) used for market research. It also involves creating print-based communications that support these community panels that varied from simple to complex illustrative infographics, informative booklets, and the occasional logo design for community panels. Besides client work, this position also involved developing in-house projects including the design of tools, Verve website, designing and occasionally animating recruitment banners, illustrations for wall decorations, and writing brand guidelines, and give courses to help non-designers understand these guidelines better.
My role of print and interaction designer at Spin as one of the lead designers started with the discussion of the timeline, concept and then designing of websites. Another aspect of my role included working on in-house projects; Spin brand development which consisted of redesigning their site, illustration of wall graphics and promotional material as well as the occasional guidance of design interns. At a later stage as an interactive designer at Spin, I got the opportunity to learn and apply front-development skills (HTML, CSS, and a little jquery).
My work at Draft FCB in Amsterdam covered both online and offline platform and it included branding, design websites and the occasional print work for Dutch commercial organisations. It also involved working on arts/cultural project: De Uitkijk.
I briefly worked as an intern (one month) then as a junior designer interactive department at Draft FCB New York. There I had the opportunity to work on several global client accounts in a very collaborative environment. It included brainstorming and creating concepts, designing and delivering assets to the development team for rich media projects as well as websites. Besides working in the interactive department I occasionally was on loan to print department.
As an intern at the Design Center, a fairly exclusive in-house design department, at Ringling College of Art and Design, I started from the research and concept stage to designing the identity and created collateral material for the Hermitage Artist Retreat
As an intern at Lekkerwerken I got the opportunity to work on internal projects (some zany illustrations that visualised their core competencies) and client projects which included research, branding web design as well as developing my flash animation skills.
As a teaching assistant, I taught and guided summer program students from age 8 to 17 in their Photoshop and Web Design/Development courses. Both courses covered learning software skills that the students needed for their final output.
The student assistant position included a combination of organisational duties like preparing submissions for competitions and designing work for admissions (based on existing designs created by senior level students) and for the Selby Gallery.
The program initially focussed on research methods and gathering visual research and forming a critical position in the areas of research. This was followed by proposing, defining and the execution of a major project. For my major project area, I mainly researched how interactive media could be used to effectively educate in a more engaging manner. And how researching existing visual materials (mainly campaigns and user-generated content) can inform style, structure, feeling and enhance an interactive experience particularly coral reefs.
The Graphic and Interactive Communication is 4-year practice-led course where I further developed design software skills, learned fundamentals of design like layout, typography, history, concept development as well as how to adapt and apply these skills to different medias. During those 4-years, I have received two nominations and one win (a collaborative project) for the Best of Ringling Show award and was featured in the CMYK magazine for my design work.
This was a course with emphasis on fundamentals of digital design and software skills.
