My name is Eva Vázquez Abraham. I was born in Barcelona (Spain) in 1970 . My mother is from the Philippines and my father is Spanish. I grew up in an environment with a curious mixture of oriental and western elements that have defined my interests, work and philosophy of life. I draw and paint since I started walking. My favorite toys were pencils, brushes, fabrics and wool (objects and materials that over time have become my working tools). As a child, I collected books about animals and also about distant countries. I dreamed of becoming a veterinarian but I was terrified by the idea of dissecting living beings, so when I grew up I decided to study Fine Arts (which paradoxically turned out to be another way of dissecting life). In college I went almost by chance to a subject called Symbolism, and instatly fell in love with it. I dicided then that I was going to continue studing all my life. So after a while I enrolled again in the University to study Philosophy. All those years I combined my studies with another of my big passions, contemporary dance, which I have practiced daily for 20 years.
I would decribe my work as a crossbreed in which all these elements are interwoven and connected. I investigate interrelations between internal experiences and the external world, the body as vehicle, container and landscape, Nature and its processes, the human being as an animal that tries to disguise its identity, the metamorphoses of life, and the morphological analogies that allow us to identify ourselves with the nature that we are.
Painting, embroydering, modeling or drawing feels like building a map or a self-prtrait that gives meaning to the relation beetwen my inner world and the outside. I writte my experiences in my works as in a travel diary.
