About me
My interest lies in design for social innovation, specifically focussed on areas relating to participatory design, commons governance and canal based transit communities. During the global pandemic, I gained first hand insight of a live service in the UK's adult health & social care sector, helping lead a residential service for a registered mental health charity, Cintre, that provides support for young adults with complex mental health needs. Currently enrolled on the MSc Service Design Innovation programme at The Institute for Design Innovation, Loughborough University, London.

In 2017 I spent time working with Public works, a small design collective/studio based in London, comprised of 7 or so individuals, each with varying interdisciplinary backgrounds from architecture to farming to engineering. The project I worked on, R-Urban, is one of four long running projects in partnership with local housing association Poplar HARCA, as part of a larger initiative Fashioning Poplar in East London. Public Works’ ethos as a critical design practice is to explore possibilities of enhancing this capacity for “urban resilience” within London. They looked to re-imagine how we can live and produce in more sustainable ways in our neighbourhoods through a co-authorship of resident-run facilities. The R-Urban site is a self-sustaining ensemble of facilities made from old shipping containers. These shipping containers were transformed into a teaching space for workshops, a tool station comprised of donated equipment from local companies and individuals. There was also an open kitchen which was powered by a small anaerobic digester, turning organic waste collected from the local community, into biogas for the kitchen and plant fertiliser for the vegetable garden. My role in this project was split between the construction of the the kitchen and helping lead and run regular free weekend workshops for the local community. The workshops that R-Urban hosted were focussed around the re-use of materials and other environmentally friendly approaches to living. The workshops I helped run included building Enzo Mari “autoproduccione” furniture out of scrap crates. We also had visiting artists giving workshops about the potential of various pigment extraction techniques from organic materials, and cooking workshops on how to make gnocchi from potatoes grown in the vegetable patch.
