About me
I’m an ambitious and creative individual with a particular interest in creating community arts projects. Recent art projects have involved working with local homeless shelters such as Catching Lives and Porchlight. Here, I have been leading workshops to engage shelter users and to make the end results accessible to the wider public in the hope of creating a positive dialogue about homelessness I am very interested in the therapeutic benefits of creating art work, and am looking to study an MA in Art Therapy in the coming years. I’m currently seeking employment in the arts sector in London, in particular, involvement in community arts projects/ curation of art workshops and fundraising. I am passionate about portrait painting and photography, and combined with my background in marketing, this has enabled me to accentuate the reach of recent projects, so much that I’ve recently received funding from the youth initiative ART31, run by The Gulbenkian. At the moment I am working/ running these projects in my spare time. Projects I’ve led: *Weekly art workshops at Porchlight (youth homeless shelter) *Weekly art workshops at Catching Lives & month long photography project (Homeless shelter) *Weekend drop in workshops for children at Block 67, The Creative Foundation, Folkestone Workshops I've assisted with: * Family Studio 'Take Me Away' 'Zine making at RA *Feminism writing/ zine workshop at The Creative Foundation, Folkestone
Projects
  • Weekly Youth Workshops at Porchlight
Weekly Youth Workshops at PorchlightI'm currently running weekly workshops at one of Porchlight's sheltered accommodation units, working with 16-20 year olds. Recent workshops have included leaf rubbing/printing and suminagashi (marbling) on to a variety of paper/ fabrics. Upcoming workshops will include Tie-dying sessions using natural ingredients such as tumeric/ berries etc, alongside a visit from a street artist to teach the residents about stenciling/ street art (as they requested) Gulbenkian ART31 *I've recently been accepted to receive funding from the Gulbenkian youth initiative: ART31, after applying last month. I'm currently being paired with an arts organisation to allow for a collaboration of different age ranges. I'm very excited about this, as it means I will be able to fully immerse myself and shelter users in a ongoing project which can reach it's full potential through funding. I'm looking to do another 'photography and identity' project, using film and digital cameras. I'm looking forward to liaising/ working closely with a variety of artists/ shelter users and shelter workers to create a memorable and interesting arts project for everyone involved.
  • Catching Lives Photography Book
Catching Lives Photography BookABOUT THE PROJECT In July, I hosted a photography project at my local homeless shelter: Catching Lives. I’d been volunteering at the art workshops there since September and wanted to create a collaborative project of my own. I’ve always been interested in photography as a mechanism for expression and a catalyst for dialogue, so decided to use this as a way to engage the shelter users. The four project participants received disposable film cameras attached with a brief: My Canterbury. Once I got the photos developed, myself and the participants went through and selected our favourites. From there, I used Photoshop to edit the photos and InDesign to create a book which consisted of Polaroid photos of the participants, an about section, a selection of their best photos, and my paintings of each person. REASONS FOR STARTING THE PROJECT 1) To showcase the artistic talents of the shelter users. 2) To use art to create a dialogue about what it means to be homeless. 3) To try and change common misconceptions and stereotypes associated with homelessness, through positing members of the shelters as artists in their own right. 4) To use the book to fund-raise for the shelter, putting the shelter users at the forefront of this process. CURRENT STATE OF PROJECT At the moment, the final edition of the book has been saved and I am in contact with various printing companies, to try and get the best deal for large-scale book printing. I am going to start by printing 60 books, selling them at £10 each, all money made going straight to the shelter. I am liaising with different organisations, and have given a talk at NADFAS, who are interested in buying some of the books and who have also awarded me a young artist award. My initial target is to raise £1,000.
