About me
For as long as I can remember, I have always enjoyed writing, whether in a short poem or haiku, a fifteen hundred-word short story, or the justification and rationale behind an idea. However, leaving university, I thought art direction was my calling and what drove me to my version of career success. After two or three years as a junior creative, I picked up some work from a copywriter basking in some well-earned annual leave. The brief was for James Harden – an acclaimed basketball player in the NBA – who had just released a new shoe, which fitted me perfectly as in a past life, I had been a promising young basketball player in Loughborough. Yes, the shoe pun was intentional. I wrote the initial copy for an email marketing ad, which I would alter to thrive on socials, digital, and various OOH platforms. The results? They offered me the role of copywriter, with the notion that I could be a good art director or a great writer. The agency was Oliver, and the account was Adidas. I went on to write copy that broke records for most email engagements and digital click-throughs. The most challenging form of copywriting is writing ads in people's inboxes. How can you elicit someone's attention through a snippet and subject line immersed in an ocean of irksome sales, discount codes, and this fall’s fashion fad? Before walking away from the Adidas account, I had set a precedence of tone and register when writing for specific platforms. I had transcended how writers prepared and presented their work – taking inspiration from my short time as an aspiring art director – I utilised semantic mood boards and the nuances that punctuation brings. During the summer of 2022, I made a new home at Vayner Media, one of the industry leaders in social media and consulting. I aimed to push my understanding of social media best practices to become a more well-rounded writer. I went from writing short, punchy copy for a renowned sports retailer to writing scripts for Indeed, tone of voice and brand guidelines for Heinz and Durex, to landing pages and social copy for Diageo. My next agency needs to be an environment that fosters ethical and creative pillars, where I can not only offer the full breadth of my creative brain but also grow into an esteemed writer. I’m eager to get stuck into something meaningful with my teammates to produce work that will improve people's lives.
