About me
Giacomo Gex is a half British and half French cinematographer, raised in the Sinai desert and on the island of Ibiza (he is fluent in Spanish, French and English). During his early teens the gift of a small camcorder spawned his passion for filmmaking. Whilst still at school he started his professional career shooting short promos that would eventually develop later into branded content, commercials, music videos, documentaries and films. At the age of 21 Giacomo wrote, directed and produced his first scripted short film set in Ibiza, produced in association with the award winning London based production company Passion Pictures. Shortly after this in 2015 he shot and directed “Repoman”, a short documentary following a vehicle repossession agent in Los Angeles. “Repoman” was selected by various film festivals around the world including the Sheffield DocFest. Since then he has worked on narrative, documentary and commercial projects all over the world including the United States, Europe and Asia. Giacomo has most recently been shooting a personal documentary of his that has been in the making for 7 years. The film follows the trials and tribulations of a genuine treasure hunter in search of the famed “Yamashita’s Gold”, a legendary Japanese WWII treasure that is said to be buried across the entire Philippine archipelago.
Projects
  • Repoman - Short Documentary
Repoman - Short DocumentaryThis was a very spontaneous project that began whilst travelling in Los Angeles, USA. I began filming and following Andrew, a repossession agent around the streets of Los Angeles. One week turned into two weeks and two weeks turned into three weeks. From this a short documentary was produced that can be watched below.
  • Home Is Ibiza - Short Film
Home Is Ibiza - Short FilmThis short film still in post-production, shot on 16mm Kodak colour and black & white film is an intimate insight into a “Home”. It asks the question: “What is home?”
  • The Treasure Hunter - A Feature Documentary
The Treasure Hunter - A Feature DocumentaryThis is a very personal project that I have been making for over 7 years now. The film follows the trials and tribulations of a genuine treasure hunter who has dedicated his life to the pursuit and search of the mythical Japanese buried treasure known as Yamashita's Gold. The film is currently in the final stage of production and will be entering post-production early 2024 scheduled to be released later that year.
