About me
Gillian is a Glasgow based Freelance Photographer specialising in Sport, Dance and Portrait photography. She became interested in photography through her love of travel and motorsport and this led to her interest in photographing sport. She completed her HND at City of Glasgow College and BA (Hons) Photography at City of Glasgow College/UWS. Throughout her HND she put her efforts into capturing live action sports events and could often be found at the side of a race track or a rugby pitch capturing the action as it unfolds. As she progressed to studying for a degree she turned her attention to portraits of athletes. This saw her complete a project based around the 2014 Commonwealth Games featuring athletes covering all 17 sports, some who went on to compete for Team Scotland in the Games. Her final year of study replaced sport with dance and this project saw her work closely with professional dancers to create exciting and dramatic images of dance.
Projects
- Form'Don't shoot what it looks like. Shoot what it feels like.' David Alan Harvey This quote became the basis for my movement project as I worked with professional dancers representing different genres to convey the emotion of dance. This project started out as an experiment of contrasting slow and fast shutter speeds and their effect on conveying movement. In involving professional dancers this then became a collaboration of two artists with a joint aim of conveying the energy and dynamism of dance through a series of still images. Interestingly dancers, like photographers, are visual people and each series of images represents aspects of their dance style and the spiritual nature of dance.
