Halina Edwards is a designer and researcher whose creative studio is informed by cultural research engaged with tradition and memory.
Working alongside communities to create public facing work, Edwards’ practice rises through finding. Exploring craft traditions and techniques that expand across flag making, fashion design, textiles and design thinking workshops.
Jamaican-born and British-raised, her practice has allowed her to collaborate with creative studios, collectives and organisations on research, commissions and workshops, such as HOME by Ronan Mckenzie, GANNI, Flock Together, Create London, Dortmunder-U, V&A East, GentleForces, FLOOR_STORY and Crafts Council.
Projects
- GANNI - King's RoadI was commissioned to make three flags for the new store opening of GANNI on the King’s Road in 2021. Hand painted, naturally dyed, and patchworked, the flags are 60s inspired, taking reference from the history of the King’s Road during this decade. Location: 94 King's Rd, London SW3 4TZ
- A Place for Everyone‘A Place for Everyone’, a new flag made by me, commissioned by Create London to commemorate Windrush Day. 2021 marks the 73rd anniversary of SS Empire Windrush arriving at Tilbury Docks, Essex in 1948. The flag is made from reflective fabric with the idea that when people are travelling late at night, the flag will always be seen and will remind people of the history of Hackney and the Windrush generation living in the borough. With the opposite side being the outline of Hackney and the outline
