Design PhD - Relevance of Qualified Self for Chronic IllnessManchester, United Kingdom
About me
Until February, I was a freelance content writer taking a range of projects from white papers on waste management to blogger outreach and press releases. I am now working on a PhD in Design looking at how the qualified self movement could impact people with chronic illnesses and whether self-tracking can benefit health and lifestyle. I am still accepting some freelance work dependent on the size and scope of the project.
Projects
  • WasteSURE
WasteSUREWasteSURE is a waste management company with an ethical and environmental approach. The company requires targeted content designed to appeal to environmental managers in large companies as well as one-off domestic clients. I create blog content and write guides on a regular basis, each one aiming to answer common questions about waste management processes. You can read all the blogs on the website here: https://www.wastesure.com/

My PhD questions as it stands is, 'how can self tracking methods help people with chronic illnesses manage their condition?' I am looking at how self-tracking and the qualified self movement could help people to improve their health and get to know themselves a bit better. I will evaluate the effectiveness of current tools and seek feedback to see whether a more suitable design could be created.

Research forms the heart of all my writing and my own curiosity has led me to some of my best work. I have a wide range of interests though I particularly enjoy writing about health and wellbeing and the environment. I most enjoy writing when it is concise and comes with an element of fun, whether that is in gentle word play or finding quirky topics to write about. My rule is that if I don’t enjoy reading it, I will find a new way of writing it! I currently write for Fat Joe, a blogger outreach company I write 3000 words per day for; and Ecofficiency a waste manager specialising in soils. I have written for a wide variety of clients including iProspect, where I wrote for Flymo, The Entertainer, Barratt London, Jury's Inn and Magnet; and WasteSURE, a waste management start-up.
