I've volunteered at a number of events since starting university. From volunteering I have gained a lot of transferable skills which I translate to the real world; communication skills, team building, organisation and listening skills.
I took part in the ATG Work in Theatre course Easter 2015, where I took part in a number of workshops related to the theatre industry. I also had a three day work placement at the Piccadilly Theatre in the West End, which was very interesting as I learnt how the theatre put on the production of Jersey Boys. Along with the experience I gained, the information I learnt from this course and my passion for the arts; I decided that I wanted to pursue a career within the theatre.
From this moment forward I started to volunteer at more arts based events and I started to use research the sector in more depth. I then used examples that I had found in journal articles and books within my assessments at University. For example, for my second year research project I chose to try and answer the question "Do "NT Live broadcasts help to improve engagement in the theatre?". I am hoping to use the research that I have learnt as a basis for my dissertation in my third year.
In Summer 2016 I have also been part of the Grosvenor Park Young Company where I was the Company Stage Manager. I had to manage the Young Company over three weeks. My duties ranged from gathering costumes and props to managing and controlling the budget through receipt logs. This was a very enjoyable experience and it helped me to broaden my career horizons within the theatre. From this I have now become Assistant Stage Manager with the Chester Little Theatre supporting their production of Outside Edge.
