About me
My name is Ian Crompton and I have recently completed a combined BA Honours Degree in Creative Writing and Drama/Theatre Studies at Roehampton University. After leaving education, my goal is to create a career focused on theatre production, directing, publishing, playwriting, hospitality, theatre management and admin.
Within my role at Geronimo Inn’s Ltd I am friendly, helpful and approachable to all patrons, suppliers, and distributors whilst interacting face to face and via phone or email. I arrange bookings and functions whilst taking appropriate contact information and input it into our bookings system. Most recently I have been assisting our inhouse Social Media Coordinator with emails/monthly mailers to customers and day to day management of official media accounts. My many years working in the hospitality industry has given me the communicative and observational skills to deliver a high level of service, both of which are easily transferable to any people-based business.
During the Creative Writing side of my degree, I have written short stories, screenplay, creative nonfiction and theory based academic essays as well as many others. I had to proofread and edit all my creative and academic work, whilst working within small editing groups sharing work and giving feedback.
I also studied the Business of Writing, specialising in the publishing industry, during which I researched the avenues a new writer might use to get their works published. During the module I had to present a literary proposal for a piece I had written, which involved writing a cover letter to a literary agent, a character profile, a scene by scene breakdown and conducting an interview with an industry professional including transcript. I chose to write my proposal based on a play I was in the process of developing.
In my final year, I chose to study Theatre Criticism which gave me the opportunity to expand my breadth of knowledge of current plays and performances, whilst understanding the historical context of the theatre critic. This module helped to develop my analytical skills by writing reviews for the plays I saw during the term.
I wrote a play as my dissertation piece for which I received a first, during which I had to study works from several different playwrights and different play structures. Writing my own play gave me the opportunity to understand the inner workings of playwriting practically as well as academically.
Prior to my degree, I completed a Foundation course in Theatre Arts at East 15 Acting School which was one of the best years of my life. Being at East 15 gave me an amazing opportunity to gain practical acting experience whilst performing in contemporary, classical and devised theatre. This experience helped to shape my personal creative ambitions, and ultimately lead me to my chosen degree subjects at University.
My experience in the hospitality industry, combined with my degree gives me the knowledge to deliver a high level of service when dealing with customers and suppliers. I have had to balance conflicting subjects whilst prioritising deadlines during my combined degree, which required me to be highly organised and adaptive to new technologies and software.
