I balance writing Gothic horror and dark fantasy fiction with blogging about British folklore - the spookier the better! I also run an accompanying podcast, sharing audio versions of my blog posts. I'm on a mission to bring folklore and legends to a wider audience as a way to help people connect with one another and the past. I contribute articles to the FolkloreThursday.com community.
Projects
- Ghosts of Victorian NewcastleI've written a piece for Tyne & Wear Archives and Museums, inspired by two paintings by Arthur Edmund Grimshaw and Louis Hubbard Grimshaw in their collections (currently on display at the Laing Art Gallery), and I used the paintings as a jumping off point to explore some ghost stories associated with Newcastle's Quayside and Central Arcade. https://twmuseumsandarchives.medium.com/ghosts-of-victorian-newcastle-347307b2fd64
- From Medicine to Murder: How the Apothecary Garden Found Its Dark SideThis was an article about the history of the so-called "poison garden", tracing its roots in the physic garden, through the development of the botanical garden, and onto the Poison Garden in its current form at The Alnwick Garden. It covered the history of these gardens, along with folklore related to the poisonous blooms within.
