About me
Hello, my name is Imogen Burns. My pseudonym happens to be Imogen. L. Smiley. I am a twenty-one-year-old graduate from the University of Derby with a 2:1 in creative and professional writing. I have been writing seriously for seven years, writing a variety of short stories to share on the website Wattpad. However, since being introduced to it in 2015, I have participated in a total of nine National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) events, each time managing to meet and exceed a goal of fifty thousand words, written within a month. I have had several pieces of writing published in this time, the first being entitled 'The Dark Angel' and is a part of the Young Writers' Association's Grim Tales anthology, published in 2015. I have also had a poem called 'Palmer's', which explored the way my friends and I brought a new sense of life to an area of the campus, published in The University of Derby Publishing Society's magazine, Writer's Block in 2016. I also had a parody piece called 'The Greatest School', written in homage to The Greatest Showman, for Little Thurrock Primary School, performed by the Year Six Leavers in July of 2019 during the school's annual Leaver's Concert. During my first year at the University of Derby, (2016-2017), I started my journey as a spoken word performance poet. I have performed across Derby, and am beginning to expand my reach to performing in other cities. Thanks to my exposure to spoken word, I was fortunate enough to be one of five lucky students recruited to represent the university at the UniSlam competition in Leicester in January 2018. This was an amazing and rare opportunity to grasp as only five students get this chance every academic year. I was proud to read my solo piece about mental health and suicide at the competition. In March of 2018, I was elected to be the secretary of the University of Derby's Publishing Society, a society I had been a member of since my first year at university. While I was in this role, I was responsible for organising weekly sessions and running the social media accounts.

    Social Media ManagerMookychick
    Grays, United KingdomPart Time
As the social media manager for Mookychick, it is my responsibility to curate content that will gain a wide reception across the appropriate social media channels; Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I am responsible for searching for appropriate articles posted on the Mookychick website, and free-to-use images that could accompany them when posting on social media. All of my content needed to be queued via Hootsuite in advance, and updated consistently to avoid a fluctuating social media presence. I was later given the opportunity to write the monthly newsletter, to keep our growing audience engaged with the content that my colleagues curated on the Mookychick website. I use the industry-standard platform Mailchimp to format these newsletters in the house style and have them sent off within the first week of each month. I am also responsible for sharing information on social media with reference to decisions made by the other members of the team, and sharing outside content such as petitions on our pages to gain more signatures.

STARS Award for Top SellerAdventure Island UK
Cashiers working at Adventure Island are tasked to up-sell attractions owned by Stockvale. When you up-sell these attractions, either the in-park dodgems or the Sea Life Adventure, an aquarium owned by Stockvale, a few hundred metres along the sea-front. At the end of the summer I had up-sold the most discounted admission for Sea Life out of the entire cashier department throughout the entire year.

Futures' Award for Academic Representation: Recognition LevelUniversity of Derby
The Futures' Award for Academic Representation was an award that I acquired through my role as an Academic Rep for the first year, single honours cohort of Creative and Professional Writing at the University of Derby. In order to acquire this qualification, I had to take part in at least twenty hours of voluntary work for the University of Derby Students' Union, where I hosted workshops for my classmates and I to feedback and workshop each other's coursework after hours. I was also required to attend meetings where I would share course feedback as the voice of the cohort.
