As a teacher working in a small unit serving children who experience social and emotional problems or mental ill health, my responsibilities and daily tasks were fairly-wide ranging.
I was responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing lessons across the year. The children’s complex sets of needs called on strong classroom leadership and I had to give clear direction to my 3 assistants. I had to constantly plan to safeguard everyone from harm in what could be very challenging and fast changing circumstances.
I was involved in the reviewing of children’s progress against the national curriculum and other metrics which assessed their emotional development.
The unit was newly set up with much scope for the team to influence its direction. I was instrumental in introducing a number of innovations and improvements. For example I created an English curriculum that could be simultaneously used as a vehicle to address emotional literacy. I conducted research through visiting similar units in London, studying academic literature, and speaking with colleagues from across the sector. I then presented my ideas to the team and won approval from the senior management team. We monitored the impact of the curriculum on an ongoing basis through collective reflective discussions.
I also served as the staff school governor and attended board meetings where I suggested improvements and scrutinized school data.

Working firstly in France and then in Greece, I worked with a very small education charity to set up good quality teaching facilities serving refugees in official camps. I initially joined as a summer volunteer but was then asked to move to Greece to oversee a project serving a Yazidi community over the Autumn and Winter.
The project involved co-ordinating sets of volunteers on the ground and working with other charities and NGOs to provide an appropriate form of education to as many children and teenagers as possible. When in Greece I built a network of useful local contacts as well as other field workers. I was able to lead a project where we improved the education offering by taking the schooling out of the makeshift tents of the camp itself into a permanent community building in the nearby village. We arranged for the families to pick up and drop off their children and won the trust and respect of both the Greek and Yazidi communities.
Day to day I was involved in teaching different sets of children maths and English. I also made well opportunities to enable trusted members of the Yaszidi community to teach and direct learning.
I was responsible for the small budget allocated to the volunteers for resources, as well as compiling reports for the head office to use when assessing impact.
