About me
Hello, my name is James Sheridan and I have just graduated from Bournemouth University studying Product Design. Throughout my time in the Design and Engineering field and as an athlete, I have grown to understand that to truly be successful, one must be motivated, committed and passionate. For the Design and Engineering field, I believe this is particularly important when it can be a rapidly evolving market and each competitor wishes to out perform the other. I strive to be as successful as I can in any challenge I undertake and appreciate the attention to detail required in functional side of design. For examples of some of my previous work, please find my work on my Coroflot page: http://www.coroflot.com/jamessheridan/Formal-Portfolio I look forward to hearing from you.

    Rehabilitation Engineering Technician
     - United KingdomInternship
As part of my degree I gained to opportunity to work as a Rehabilitation Engineering Technician for 40 weeks. This took place at Chailey Clinical Services, which is an NHS funded department which specializes in the design and manufacture of posture support equipment including: standing, seating, lying, sleeping and tricycles and more. This equipment is provided, either through NHS funding or private, to clients who suffer from more serious medical conditions, this could be Cerebral Palsy or in some cases lesch nyhan syndrome. This is a rare condition that causes neurological and behavioural abnormalities that causes compulsive self-mutilation. Due to the mature of the work and the clients the department works with, everything is bespoke and one off builds, tailored to each client’s unique requirements. The job role required the design and manufacture of posture support equipement on a client by client basis typically. These bespoke built products would be assessed and handed over to the clients directly by myself and other industry professionals, such as Osteotherapists, Physiotherapists and Specialist Rehabilitation Engineers. Throughout my time at Chailey Clinical Services I felt I learnt a huge amount, both specializing in the engineering and design field and in how to work with a professional. Some key areas in the engineering and Design field I have learnt are the ability to file manage and use CAD effectively as part of a team through disciplined folder and naming management of files and features. My technical drawing skills have dramatically improved through learning to setup templates and to comply with BSI 8888. I have also learnt a great deal about manufacturing both in theory and how to use a machine shop. I have learnt to TIG weld and use both a manual and CNC based Mills. The knowledge of the manufacture industry was reinforced when I was able to visit the Mach 16 show at the NEC in April and then was invited to visits Canon’s HQ to see their new 3D printing technology and “mixed reality” prototypes. Through working alongside a range of professionals who specialize in different fields I have learnt to have to communicate at different levels. I have been involved in a variety of meetings with clients so I have had to learn to tailor differently how I may explain an engineering issue to suit a client with no Engineering knowledge and then to a Senior Specialist Rehabilitation Engineer. I have had to learn to be strict with my time management and juggle a number of jobs at the same time to meet deadlines. I feel that everything I have completed in my placement year have aided me greatly in progressing to becoming a well-rounded and disciplined professional in the Design and Engineering field.
