I co-founded a theatre company in Shenzhen (China) and worked as the producer for our first show; Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella the Musical”. ! In this role I arranged a venue, negotiated sponsorship from an established business, navigated Chinese law to produce the show legally, was the liaison with the ticketing platform and managed the funding, budget and hiring of all cast and crew. This was an invaluable learning experience as I not only learned how to run a company and theatre performance, but I discovered the intricacies of Chinese business communication. ! Further, I ran the marketing campaign. The show sold out, making triple budget back and was offered to run a second season in the neighbouring city. Until the coronavirus hit we were auditioning for a summer show and planning for Cinderella to tour across South China.

TAL creates educational television programs for children, both online and for smart TVs. I began as a performer (singing, dancing, acting) but after six months was promoted to show-runner status for one of the main shows; Phonics. I completed market research, developed creative ideas, communicated with Chinese editors and directors. An episode was produced every week and during my year as show-runner the show went from lowest ratings to the highest in the network. ! I also worked in a managerial role. I managed a team of six foreign colleagues and acted as a liaison between the foreign co-workers and Chinese managers as well as the HR department. This position helped me to learn strong cross-cultural communications skills and improved my management skills: it can sometimes be difficult to satisfy the Chinese workload and deadlines, without the performers experiencing burnout. Therefore, a large amount of my time was spent negotiating with both the foreigners and Chinese bosses.
