Type Design InternDalton Maag
- London, United KingdomInternship
I spent two months expanding my knowledge of type design and font engineering at the Dalton Maag Studio in Brixton. The internship lasted 8 weeks with different tasks to tackle in each. It started with basic calligraphy of a few different styles and hand-drawing classic typefaces to great detail. Week three, I began a new design of a new typeface of my choice. I decided to explore something of the Clarendon genre but with a modern take. Using FontLab5, the following six weeks included: drawing an ‘ideation’ glyph set (which included lots of testing, printing, checking); expanding ideation set after approval; drawing extreme weights; interpolating between extremes and weight planning; drawing an ideation set f italics and interpolating between extreme weights to match weight of romans.
