W139 is a production and presentation space for contemporary art in Amsterdam. In my role as a Communications Assistant, I was responsible researching, writing and editing exhibition texts in collaboration with participating artists and the curatorial team for dissemination in the space and online. This required strong written and verbal communication skills. I also created and planned a bi-monthly newsletter and press releases for current or upcoming exhibitions and/or events. During the placement I sourced new partnership opportunities and developed relationships with press contacts to broaden the gallery’s audience. I successfully established a partnership with Amsterdam Stadspas (or CityPass) to offer partially funded tickets to visitors from disadvantaged backgrounds. In this position, I provided flexible administrative and organisational support to other team members to ensure the smooth running of the gallery. I assisted the Director with funding applications and reporting by collating and analysing visitor data (physical and digital). I also wrote and designed reports to be sent to partners, which required a high level of computer literacy. I took on the responsibility of recruiting and co-ordinating a large group of paid volunteers to work in the gallery. This involved interviewing potential volunteers, collecting their details, familiarising them with the space and organising a schedule for each exhibition. I was also responsible for general administrative duties and support, including: taking minutes of meetings, answering phone calls and emails, answering or forwarding enquiries, processing shop orders and managing stock. I was praised by the team for my adaptability and proactivity and was subsequently offered a part-time position.
