About me
I am a Master of Music student at Newcastle University. My research thesis examines how Opera was used as a tool of Propaganda, Control and Rebellion during the Nazi administration. I have excellent communication, organisational and leadership skills. As a choral scholar and a classically trained singer I am confident in front of people and with audiences. I have given many presentations on my own research and I perform regularly both as a soloist and as part of an ensemble. I have organised choirs and singing programmes and am currently the pro bono Director of Music at St Andrew’s Church, Newcastle I work well with people of all ages and backgrounds; adults and children; customers, peers and managers. As a qualified swimming teacher, I have proven my ability to motivate and inspire children and communicate with parents. My Masters thesis focuses on how Opera was by the Nazis during their administration and how it helped in the denazification processes. It is split into four chapters. The first will focus on Opera and its uses in Germany during the Third Reich. It will explore how exactly opera was used as a tool of propaganda by the Nazis as well as to its effectiveness. It will also look into how exactly opera influenced Hitler and his politics, specifically looking at Wagner as a main source of this profound influence. The second chapter will be exploring Jewish Operas in the Third Reich. This will be split into two parts. The first will look into operas that were composed, such as the children’s opera Brundibar and Der Kaiser von Atlantis, and or operas that were performed in the ghettos. The second part of the chapter will focus on opera works by Jewish composers or composers who had Jewish influences and the lack of performance and attention that came from it. The third chapter will focus on the composition of opera during the Third Reich, which will encompass the rules that were laid out by the Nazis that composers had to follow as well as looking at four particular composers and the differences they had in this area. The fourth and final chapter will explore the ways in which opera was used in the denazification process as well as how opera composition was beginning to be able to progress from the constraints that the Nazis had held on the art form.
