Research dissertation: 'Femina Obscura: Explorations of Negative Capability in the Photography of Birgit Jürgenssen'
Resting on the notion of woman’s ‘absence’ or obscurity in visual language, I looked towards Jürgenssen’s use of darkness as a creative strategy. Using both feminist and psychoanalytic theory, I explored how Jürgenssen finds potential in the absence of light to simultaneously deconstruct the place of the female body in visual language and create a space in which unconscious, unrecognised feminine meanings can be signified.
