My role as a sample room intern at Erdem involved sample cutting, pattern tracing, hand sewing, compiling development packs, running errands , stocktakes and thread marking for embroideries. The role saw me working closely with others in a variety of group sizes ranging form 2-10 individuals. This helped to develop a wide range of communication skills across a variety of tasks. This placement saw me helping out at the London fashion week show, providing me with experience in working in fast paced, high pressure enviroments. The nature of the sample room work saw me working closely with fabrics and helped me develop my understanding of different fabrics and their applications. The sample cutitng and hand sewing work helped to develop my attention to detail and high level of care due to the expensive garments and high standards at Erdem. This role furthered my enthusiasm for the design process and was a brilliant oppurtunity to see how garments are developed from design through toiling to the catwalk; the handling of complicated patterns and watching the construction process take place also furthered my interest in pattern cutting.
My duties as an intern at Beaumont Organic were wide ranging due to the small nature of the company. This saw me complete tasks in the following areas: accessory design, garment design, competitor research, mood board generation, blogs, blog collaborations, excel spreadsheets, data entry, errands, web maintenence, logistics, order processing, photo editing and quality control checks. The placement was a valuable oppurtunity to see how a small fashion business runs through an entire season and allowed me to develop my communication working closely as a member of a small team. The breadth of tasks helped me to improve my design skills through use of CAD and hand drawing and applying the skills in the context of a season for a specific demographic and theme. It helped me to build on my abilities to construct a well thought out and balenced range both in terms of colour and silhouette. This placement also saw me writing a wide range of content for the company as I maintained thee websites blog section producing new content and sourcing bloggers to collaborate with. These tasks helped improve the quality of my written communication on two levels in terms of engaging witht the consumer as well as dealing with self-employed proffessionals in order to ensure collaborations worked for everyone involved. The placement as a whole has furthered my enthusiasm for sustainability within fashion as well as my interest in design and the trend developement and research process.
