ITPMRecurly
San Francisco, United StatesFull Time
My name is Teresa, a Taiwanese woman who moved to the United States for a fresh start after the challenges of divorce. With the support of my uncle and aunt, I was introduced to an opportunity at Recurly, where I began my journey as an IT Project Manager (ITPM).
Starting this new chapter was far from easy. I faced not only the demands of my role but also racial bias as a minority woman. My ideas were often dismissed, and I had to work harder to prove myself. However, these challenges fueled my determination. I immersed myself in mastering the company’s systems and processes, delivering impactful results. A key project—streamlining the payment system—reduced costs and improved operations, showcasing my value to the team.
Over time, my persistence transformed skepticism into respect. I became a trusted team member, and this experience not only solidified my career but also helped me regain confidence, turning past struggles into a source of strength and growth.

ITASPEED Technology
- No. 2, Hsin Ann Rd, East District, Hsinchu City, Taiwan 300Full Time
I am Teresa, and after earning my master's degree at Caltech, I returned to Taiwan to begin my career as a full-stack engineer at Aspeed Technology. With my international education, I entered the role with high expectations but quickly encountered challenges in Taiwan’s corporate culture. Unlike the U.S., where knowledge and innovation are prioritized, I found that Taiwanese companies often value seniority over expertise. This made it difficult for my ideas to gain traction or for me to fully showcase my capabilities.
While these cultural differences were frustrating, they offered valuable lessons about adaptability and resilience. My time at Aspeed also marked a personal milestone, as I discovered I was pregnant, leading to my decision to leave the role. Though my tenure was short and at times disillusioning, it was a meaningful experience that broadened my perspective on professional growth in different environments.
