This was my first role working within a fine luxury retail environment.
Working within the Stephen Hughes Fine Diamond store is where I learnt the core jewellery knowledge that I have today.
The job enabled me to experience working within a fine jewellery retailer, dealing with customers repairs, orders, enquiries and various tasks.
I was able to work whilst studying for my JET 1 (Jewellery Education Training at NAJ) this course covers core gemstone & manufacturing knowledge, also selling and merchandising skills that any working jeweller needs in the industry.
The course covered key topics: how to confidently identify popular gemstone, understanding how the four C's of diamond grading works, metals, selling techniques, visual displays, watches and hallmarking.
Along with studying, the majority of learning came from selling and having to engage with customers on a daily basis, particularly with more challenging requests. Having to work with the customers who are searching for the perfect engagement & wedding jewellery can be challenging, but also a great experience.
I was also lucky enough to work amongst magnificent vintage & pre-owned items, which to me was particularly interesting.
From this, I discovered how passionate I was about unusual jewellery items, which also lead me to discover new designers that take a conceptual approach to fine luxury jewellery.
