About me
My name is Lorna Wheele and I am a graduate of Illustration Animation from Kingston University (2017). My natural approach to pursuing a project starts with me drawing from real life observational research, whether the project is a fictional narrative or a reportage project. When I draw I  really focus on what i’m seeing. I trust in my line making and there is proof in the fact that I never use a rubber and I embrace my mistakes. Every mark made on location is a reaction to what I see and how I felt about it at the moment it happened. Capturing these transient moments sometimes results in abstract mark making.  My work seeks to incorporate the truth which comes with the process of drawing, with the immediacy which keeps it alive and moving. I take the static movement within my illustration and challenge what can happen when it is put through the process of animated movement. Ultimately, I want to blur the line between what is considered illustration and what is considered animation in the field today. I don’t want to lose the spontaneity of my drawing by passing it through rigorous storyboarding and re-storyboarding. Instead, I seek to exaggerate this immediacy by recreating the action that took place while I was drawing from life. Being able to bring my drawings to life in this way allows my work to hold onto the immediacy of pencil line which comes naturally to me while working, as well as creating a focal point to direct the audience to a particular area within the work.
Projects
  • 'Where's the Line?'
'Where's the Line?'This project questions several aspects of overcrowded train travel: how people cope with the norm of this everyday trauma, why this claustrophobic environment has become the norm, and what happens to safety during these overcrowded periods. This project was exhibited as part of Kingston University Illustration Animation Graduate Show and as part of 'More' Kingston University Illustration Animation Graduate Show at the Oxo Tower Barge House, South Bank London, June 2017.
