About me
TLDR; Broadcast and print journalist who loves travel, new experiences, and finding the human behind the story. As you can see from my CV, I have experience working in both broadcast and print journalism in a number of countries, which has provided me with invaluable skills, learning opportunities, and perspectives. I am currently a freelancer at CNN International, where I am a production assistant and media coordinator. In my role as media coordinator it is my responsibility to rapidly turn around clips for use on CNN’s various shows and platforms. As a result, I understand general media law and fair use guidelines, and I can easily identify key moments in videos to pull as SOTs, VO, etc. At CNN, I have also worked on the news desk as a researcher and a field producer, producing correspondents’ lives shots (including Facebook Lives), and video packages from conception to completion. These packages include an interview with Nigel Farage on the morning of the Brexit result, which I produced to work across both CNN's digital and TV platforms. I am a creative, fast and competent video editor -- having originally self-trained, and later refined my skills through further training at CNN. I have also experience self-shooting, and presenting and interviewing in front of the camera for a number of outlets, including That's Manchester. I am also a celebrity interviewer for 1883 Magazine, where I research personalities for long-form profile/interview pieces. I am also a travel journalist, which has taken me to destinations such as the far-flung and exotic corners of North Wales (Jamaica’s press trip was full -- thankfully the weather is pretty similar). Previously, I worked at Chicago-based Rivet Radio as a world anchor and a news & content curator. Here, I learned from a veteran journalist who taught me, ‘journalism is about finding a way to tell a story the audience doesn’t know it’s interested in yet’. Last year, I was awarded the Simon Cumbers Media Fund to travel to Uganda for The Irish Times to write a series of articles on women’s reproductive rights in the country. Whilst covering the story, I made it my priority to interview local girls and women to highlight their personal experiences and concerns. I am curious, driven, and somewhat restless. As a result, my desire to discover interesting stories has seen me conduct interviews in stunt planes, BDSM clubs, and on red carpets. Outside of work, my love of travel has taken me to 30 countries, 14 U.S. states, and countless cities. Of these, I have been fortunate to live and work in New York, Chicago, Dublin, and London – as a journalist in the latter three. • Strengths: I learn new skills quickly. I am creative, yet at ease with technical aspects of roles. I never use comic sans. I am trained in Premier Pro and Pro Tools, as well as a number of other video and audio editing programs. I am proficient in social media, which has been part of my role in every position I have worked in. • Weaknesses: I am a fan of the Oxford comma. (I’m aware it’s forbidden by most style guides and I’m prepared to change.)
