Matt is a narrative-driven Designer Maker, working in both contemporary and traditional making processes.
An explorative problem solver with a good sense of humour and play, Matt utilises hands-on practice combined with emerging digital technologies (such as 3D Printing) to create engaging outcomes.
Current projects include investigating how modern techniques can work to enhance and evolve traditional craft practices.
Matt will be graduating from The University of Plymouth in 2020 with a BA in 3D Design: Designer Maker.
Projects
- Sabre Wall HooksThese simple steam-bent coat hooks were an experiment with how functionality can be added through simple processes - cuts, curves, and the addition of complementary materials. The hook has three sections - a large hook for a hat, a loop for a scarf/gloves, and a circular dowel hook with leather grip detailing for a coat.
- ThinkPRINTED CollectionThe ThinkPRINTED collection was inspired by the desire to create value from 3D printed objects in the home. By combining a 3D printed outer shell with a Jesmonite core, strength and value could be added with a simple production procedure. The 3D print acts as mould and final surface in one, drastically reducing finishing time and also resulting in reduced manufacturing waste.
- Loop ChandelierLoop Chandelier A spiralling mesh of simple steam-bent oak loops, this chandelier lighting was designed to create dramatic contrasts through the play of the light and shadow across the timber. Each piece of timber that forms the nest of the main chandelier was cut from waste material found within the wood workshop, making the most from each and every piece.
- Hull LightshadeHull Light Shade Created in one single dramatic motion, the HULL pendant light shade is steam bent from Ash to form a profile inspired by the lines of a ships hull. Designed for communal areas and over-counter displays, the curves and warmth of the timber create a gentle spotlight on the surfaces below. Formed of two planks of sawn Ash, both panels are steamed simultaneously, before being places within and sandwiching a forming jig. This jig is swiftly rotated, shaping both left and right hal
- Reflection BenchThe Reflection Bench takes the form of one chair, reflected twice, and combined - three chairs drawing together into one. Inspired by a three-word brief of Mirror, Upside Down, and Slot, the bench is a playful interpretation of the unexpected realities formed by reflections. The piece is made from hand-crafted solid ash.

Summer SchoolSnowdon Summer School
- Dumfries House, Cumnock KA18 2NJ, UK
In the summer of 2019, Matt was chosen as one of eight students to travel to Dumfries House in Scotland to participate in the Snowdon Summer School - set up by David Linley, the Earl of Snowden, in partnership with the Prince's Foundation and sponsored by Penhaligons.
Matt spent an intensive week living and working in the Dumfries House estate under the expert tuition of Jonathan Rose, William Warren and Naseer Yasna (Lazo Studios), studying key pieces of the extensive Chippendale furniture collection held by the estate. This culminated in the construction of a side table based upon the Chippendale Breakfast Table, completed with a custom-designed marquetry veneer inspired by the house and grounds.
