MA Global Media and Digital CommunicationsSOAS, University of London

Through considering how, where and by whom media is produced, consumed and used, I developed advanced knowledge and understanding of the theoretical, methodological and empirical issues involved in the analysis of non-western media and communications within historical and contemporary contexts. I examined the interface between mainstream global media and communication theory and a variety of other perspectives and approaches applied to the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East, including globalisation, political economy, critical theory, cultural studies, political communication and post-structuralism. I interrogated alternative ways to situate mediated articulations of agency and subjectivity in non-Western contexts through engaging with various texts challenging the hegemonic claims of mainstream Western media theory that insists the rest of the world subscribe to a narrow exclusive vision of the world. In my speciality on Journalism, I analysed the history of contention over transnational news flow, examining the main producers in the West and in the South, and the emerging patterns of flow, use and reception.

    BA Ancient HistoryUniversity of Exeter
     - Exeter, United Kingdom
I achieved this degree alongside proficiency in Japanese. I developed an in-depth understanding of ancient cultures, ranging from the Greeks and Romans to the Scythians and Persians. In my dissertation, I conducted a semiotic and ethnographic analysis of the cultures that surrounded the ancient Black Sea Region - most specifically that of the Scythians and Thracians - in the sixth and fifth millennia, and the fifth and fourth centuries BCE. I aimed to investigate the idea of the ‘body as archive’: how tattoos can be considered a personal archive of an individual’s identity and apply this to the ancient cultures of the Black Sea Region. I achieved this through the analysis and interrogation of both written and material sources in order to formulate a comprehensive ethnographic study of the cultures in the Black Sea Region.
