Hi, I am Michaela Washington-Welch, a self-taught independent artist, my journey in the realm of visual arts has been deeply intertwined with my experiences as both an educator and a lifelong creative. For the past five years, I've had the privilege of teaching the visual arts, a role that has enriched my understanding of artistic expression and human connection. However, my identity as an artist has been a constant thread in my life, nurtured from the moment I could grasp a pen.
My artistic practice is rooted in the exploration of social issues, often serving as a vessel for amplifying the voices and experiences of marginalized communities. Drawing inspiration from the world around me, I confront societal stereotypes and challenge prevailing narratives that perpetuate injustice and inequality. From the powerful resurgence of #BlackLivesMatter in 2020 to the intimate portrayal of my own struggles as a woman navigating a patriarchal society, my work serves as a reflection of the shifting landscapes of contemporary social discourse.
Through my art, I strive to dismantle harmful stereotypes and foster empathy, understanding, and solidarity among viewers. Each piece is imbued with a sense of urgency and purpose, inviting audiences to engage in critical dialogue and reflection on the pressing issues of our time. As an artist and educator, I am committed to using my platform to advocate for positive social change and to create spaces for marginalized voices to be heard and celebrated.
