Food and Wine Blogger (Intern)Rude Wines
    London, United KingdomInternship
I produce articles for the Rude Wines blog about food and wine. This internship is challenging because it is remote, so I manage my own deadlines and select topics independently. Often these topics are new to me, meaning I have to comprehend new information and synthesise it into something that is easy to read. This internship requires me to produce content to a high standard. Content writing is an opportunity for me to exercise my creativity and receive editorial feedback. I am further developing my communication skills.

Distribution Centre Volunteer and Trustees SecretaryRutland FoodBank
    Oakham, United KingdomFreelance
I started volunteering in the distribution centre at Rutland FoodBank as I was interested to understand food poverty better. This role involves working as part of a team to distribute food in Oakham. I organise the store room, put packages together and ensure that clients are comfortable. Key challenges include adapting to food shortages and meeting client needs. Volunteering allowed me to be active in the community during my Masters. After some months volunteering in the distribution centre, I was asked to be the Trustees Secretary. Attending the Trustees meetings gave me a good insight into how a charitable organisation functions, including finances, fundraising, volunteer management, health and safety and policy. A good relationship with the volunteers, clients and trustees enabled me to do my master’s research at the foodbank.

MSc Food PolicyCity, University of London
    London, United Kingdom
This course was an opportunity for me to use my awareness of international politics and culture in a food context. This course involved in depth analysis of data and policy. The modules covered health policy, social policy, political economy, the policymaking process, supply chain analysis and the ecological impacts of food. I researched and wrote projects on the supply chain of seafoods, airline food products, rice production, the impact of pesticides on bees, halal and kosher food labelling, Finnish food policy and UK food poverty. My thesis focussed on food poverty interventions in rural areas of the UK. I designed and managed an original project to a tight deadline. I conducted stakeholder analysis and liaised with foodbank users and local authorities. The research produced guidelines for a “service-user engagement” strategy to empower individuals in food poverty.
