Will Pham in Conversation with Natalie TanFamily, time, and the present are three key pillars of Will Pham’s first solo exhibition Little Vietnam, the most recent show at Turf Projects in London’s Borough of Croydon that took place from May 14 – July 6, 2019. The 16-minute video work of the same name, captured on Super 8 film, depicts several everyday scenes centred around Pham’s multi-generational family: going to church, spending time at the park, preparing for a backyard barbecue at his uncle’s new house, ending at Pham’s parent’s re

Sun, Sweat, Skirt, Fan | Ho Rui AnIn September 2018, Centre A presented "Sun, Sweat, Skirt, Fan", Singaporean artist Ho Rui An’s first solo exhibition in Canada. The exhibition featured two works: "Solar: A Meltdown" (2014-) and "Great Fans (Assortment)" (2018). "Solar: A Meltdown" is a performance lecture that begins in Amsterdam’s Tropenmuseum, at the sweaty back of a wax figure of Dutch anthropologist Charles Le Roux, and from there navigates tropes of sweltering tropical heat and perspiration to examine the relationship betw

Deputy DirectorCentre A, Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art
     - Vancouver, CanadaFull Time
Centre A is a Vancouver-based public art gallery whose mission it is to challenge Eurocentricity. We provide a platform for contemporary Asian art that, resisting the tendency to define Asian as other and elsewhere, explores concerns emerging from trans-Pacific or Asian-rooted cultural-historical trajectories, while seeking to activate contemporary art’s vital role in deepening trans-cultural and trans-national linkages and mutual understanding among people in Vancouver and in global contexts. We host 5-7 exhibitions per year, host countless numbers of impactful public programming, and provide mentorship opportunities for emerging cultural practitioners. As Deputy Director, I oversaw office management, and provided leadership in the absence of the Executive Director/Curator, including working with the Board of Directors. I worked directly with the ED/Curator to write all of Centre A's grants and reports, gaining experience with a variety of project and operating grant applications, including Canada Council for the Arts, BC Arts Council, City of Vancouver, and BC Gaming. I manage and delegate tasks related to the organization's books, and liaise with related contractors. I was also the main person responsible for human resources, and engage in hiring, supervision, recruitment, and performance review processes for four levels: junior staff, co-op students, interns, and volunteers. I provided guidance and made decisions in the best interests of the organization, and provided support for my fellow co-workers. In addition, I often liaised with artists, and participated in discussions around Centre A's artistic programming. Working with the team, I performed my tasks with two goals in mind: to make sure Centre A is an organization with real purpose, that produced exhibitions and programming with the highest of artistic excellence and impact on the public, and to ensure a healthy, democratic, and safe environment for my co-workers.
