About me
I have a lot of imagination. I think about and create in a number of different areas. Music, stories, products, technology, furniture. I don’t want it all to evaporate the moment I’m no longer here, so I am documenting it here. If you see something you think is a good idea and you’d like to help bring it into reality, please get in touch.
Projects
  • YourMove
YourMoveConsider your next move carefully. YourMove Games are important. Spending time with each other is important. A good game is something you want to keep going back to and an experience you want to share. Chess is one of the oldest games there is and in creating this piece, I wanted to play my own small part in the continuance of a classic. I’m privileged. I understand that what is created in my workshop, will be given a life outside of it by my customers. A life that will perhaps span generations of owners. This is why I wanted to make something that would encourage those generations to come together. The cabinet can be hung on a wall and the board and pieces are magnetised, allowing 'remote' or 'as you're passing' games to be played. It can of course, be taken down for a more traditional face to face, over a glass of something. Steamed Beech, with Purple Heart veneer and a chequered webbing playing surface. Remember, its not the winning, it's the taking part. To enquire about ‘YourMove’, contact me, Nic James, at The James Lilly Workshop. (nic.james@jameslilly.co.uk)
  • Jardiniere
JardiniereWhat grows around, comes around. Jardiniere Good ideas aren't forgotten, they just adapt with the times. The jardiniere was a popular addition to any nineteenth century home that desired to demonstrate its cultured green fingers. ‘Jardiniere’ is a French word from the feminine form of ‘Gardener’. It actually has three meanings, perhaps the most common among which, is a receptacle [or more rarely a stand] upon which, or into which, the owner would place plants, flowers or herbs. These days, plants in the home are a welcome distraction from all that domestic 'noise'. They bring a sense of calm and a natural aesthetic only truly found in nature. I firmly believe that the concept of the jardiniere is long overdue a revival and with this piece, would like to #bringbackthejardiniere! Taking its cue's from the specimens it supports, Ash stalks and platforms are buried in classic Italian slate. The pieces can be used individually, or for real planting power, as a triumvirate. To become part of the jardiniere revivalist movement, contact me, Nic James, at The James Lilly Workshop. (nic.james@jameslilly.co.uk)
  • KerfChair
KerfChairComfort is not a design feature. KERF ...and utility does not mean basic. These and other design myths are exposed in this simple piece. I’ve had some painful memories of chairs I’d had the unfortunate pleasure of occupying and challenged myself to make a straight forward, well designed, comfortable chair and ‘Kerf’ is what I came up with. The name comes from the use of a technique called 'kerfing', which is key to this piece. Kerfing uses identically dimensioned and evenly spaced grooves, cut into an otherwise stiff material which magically then becomes flexible. With kerfing placed in the seat and back, suddenly there's an all wooden chair that shapes itself to your profile, rather than the other way round. Talking about the wood, the frame is solid American Walnut and the seat and back are both from Birch ply. Birch ply is ideal for kerfing because of its layered nature. If you've been searching for a simple, comfortable chair, contact me, Nic James, at The James Lilly Workshop and enquire about ‘Kerf’. (nic.james@jameslilly.co.uk)
