The role provided strategic leadership and direction within the British Council’s East Asia arts
strategy for China and the developed markets of the North East Asia (NEA) cluster (Hong
Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Singapore). This new role was uniquely placed to
demonstrate the role of arts in cultural diplomacy and as a key soft power lever. The role
ensured that a cross-cluster effective strategy was in place, delivering to the British Council’s
longer-term objectives in the region, as well as supporting those of government partners, and
the arts sectors in both respective countries.
