  • Cardamine
CardamineCardamine is my debut Womenswear collection. The collection consists of 10 looks with each piece designed to personify a moment in my self-penned modern day fairytale, Cardamine and The Storm. Cardamine and The Storm stems from musings I had during a recent trip to Iceland, an utterly beautiful country with a rich cultural and natural history that I have since become completely fascinated with. I was mesmerized by the wide, vivid mountainous landscapes and envisaged a collection that could attempt to encompass their beauty in clothes. I have referenced and re-worked Traditional Icelandic Costume in this collection, manipulating and modernizing folkloric elements by lifting hems, changing necklines and adorning with contemporary finishes. I closely studied the structure of the bodices, pinafore smocks, kilt style skirts and aprons of the 13th century Icelandic peasant woman to produce eclectic, striking garments. I have also incorporated rudiments of Traditional Icelandic headwear, particularly the Skildahufa crown, to create a range of accompanying millinery. The collection is set in a colour palette reflective of a mountain scene and symbolic to the story. Refreshing lilacs, deep navy blue and grey hues and metallic silver. A sophisticated choice of colours weaved into weighty structural, sumptuous fabrics aims to compliment the Spring/Summer trends of 2016 and guide the narrative. In further research, I discovered that the Cardamine Nymanii or Lady’s Smock flower is indigenous to the grasslands and mountains of Iceland. This delicate lilac flowering plant seemed ideal to incorporate as adornment to the pieces and to inspire the writing of Cardamine and The Storm. There is much folkloric superstition surrounding the Lady’s Smock flower, as it was believed to be sacred to the fairies. This flower was thought to be very unlucky and if it were picked, it would instantly create intense thunder and lightening storms and so was never taken into the home or included in May Day garlands. Fueled with this history, I have written Cardamine and The Storm. This story has since been narrated by Serbian Fairy Tales', Jelena Curcic and set to an original soundtrack by Aerial Spires.
