About me
Omari is a screendance practitioner based in North London and, for the past decade, has been choreographing, teaching and performing for music videos, film, tv and theatre. His work revolves around combining hip-hop dance influences with a contemporary choreographic process. Resulting in the purposeful creation of narratives told through dance and the camera. ​ A first class honours degree in BA Performing Arts led Omari to perform for 6 years in the West End and international touring productions of 'Stomp!'. Alongside this, Omari choreographed, directed, performed and produced a varied reel of dance on film work with screndance production company, The Motion Dance Collective, of which he founded in 2011 As a filmmaker, Omari has created digital-dance and documentary content for Breakin' Convention, Parkinson's UK, and Pioneers History Dance Festival to name a few. ​ As an independent choreographer and dancer, Omari has created works for Weetabix. Stanton Warriors, Greenpeace UK, Diabetes UK, ADAD (Association of Dance from the African Diaspora) and most recently has become associate movement director for the London International Gospel Choir. ​ Omari is also a keen workshop developer and continues to provide workshops/classes in body percussion. screendance, choreography and hip-hop dance genres at university, secondary and primary school education levels. Including visiting lectures and workshops for youth dance groups and performing arts specialised programmes.

    Don't Play with L(Kn)ives‘Don’t Play with L(Kn)ives’ is an original Hip Hop Screendance piece that explores knife crime in the UK. Bringing together some of the UK’s finest Hip Hop dancers, a live violinist & a spoken word artist. ‘Don’t Play with L(Kn)ives’ will shine a light on this taboo aspect of British culture – sharing untold stories to deliver a poignant message to young people.

    The Motion Dance Collective (MDC) was founded in 2011 by director and choreographer Omari 'Motion' Carter. Since its beginnings MDC has gained worldwide recognition as a production company that produces thought-provoking work combining dance, digital arts, and film. using the hyrbrid practice that is screendance, to tell relevant stories with dance and the screen. ​ Several MDC films have been screened across the UK and internationally at both dance-film and mainstream film festivals including, Loikka Dance Film Festival (Helsinki, Finland), Cinedans Dance on Screen festival (Amsterdam, Netherlands) British Urban Film Festival (London, UK), Lightmoves Festival of Screendance (Limerick, Ireland) and most recently the San Francisco Dance Film Festival (U.S.A). ​ In 2016, MDC's short film 'End of the Block' won the UK Screendance Award at Perth Screendance Festival and following this, in 2017, short body percussion film 'Ease on Down' became a finalist in the Best Soundtrack category of the My Røde Reel - Short Film Competition. ​ The MDC's purpose is to innovate the screendance production process, present audiences with thought-provoking dance-on-screen narratives and engage artists with playful and educational digital-dance workshops.
