About me
Currently: Over the past year I have gained experience as a Marketing Assistant for Lyric Hammersmith theatre in west London. During this time I gained skills in Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Photography, Filming and Editing video, creating and managing a marketing campaign and producing a host of sold out events. In addition to this I gained experience in creating and editing spreadsheets and managing social media accounts including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn on behalf of the Lyric. Formerly: As well as having experienced a newsroom, as part of an internship I undertook with Guestlist, a small, independent online magazine, I gained experience as a journalist and writer, I was tasked with producing articles for the “Serious News” section of the website, and conducted independent research on topics of my choice, raging from retrospective political think-pieces and opinion, to current affairs and editing. Here I also gained valuable social media experience, ranging from updating blogs to scheduling tweets and posts using Tweet Proof and planning future content using Google Docs calendars and spreadsheets. My role also included working with the graphic design team to position articles and edit longer pieces into short-form for the e-magazine that launched during my time. I became confident discussing and curating both my own ideas, and the ideas of the team to produce the best results and my academic background gave me a confidence for and aptitude in editing and presenting, which also proved useful. I was also given some administrative responsibilities during the time. As a masters graduate in History, majoring in African Government and Politics, I have a strong background in research and have gained invaluable experience writing and articulating my findings in both academic and social settings. During my undergraduate degree (English Literature) I became proficient in writing and confident in dealing with large volumes on information, often to strict time constraints, and developed a skill for critical thinking and writing. These skills have been further refined of the course of my postgraduate studies and my ability to research increased in both depth and precision. I have a natural love of creativity both in my writing and in my day-to-day activities and I believe that this is a great asset in overcoming obstacles as they present themselves. Due to the nature of my studies, I have become comfortable working under pressure and am confident both setting targets and meeting them, ensuring that I can also provide assistance to those around me. Furthermore, I am a fast and keen learner who actively seeks out and takes on responsibility. I have volunteered with charities, providing workshops to children from disadvantaged backgrounds and taught in a number of schools across west London during my time as a postgraduate student. I believe this is a testament to my resolve and highlights my ability to be responsible, to take action and to deal with complex and difficult situations from a position of clarity and authority. I have a strong arts background and am a poet, writer and artist myself, committed to expression through my medium. I have completed creative writing courses with Apples and Snakes and have worked for The Poetry Society where I co-ran the café and provided support to regular events there. I am also the Creative Director of Pen-Ting Poetry, a politically minded BAME poetry event in the heart of London. We aim to platform young people and encourage them to use their art as a legitimate means of political engagement.
