I am currently on a ski season in St Christoph, Austria, working in the 'Sporthotel'. As a Hotel Assistant i have been required to help out in maintaining a healthy and enjoyable environment for any guests. From cleaning toilets to snow clearing, a hotel assistant has to make sure the hotel is running smoothly without any issues. It was also stressed by Inghams that all hotel assistants must have excellent people skills to make the guests feel at home. Having lived here for 5 month it has also given me an insight of living within a different culture for a period of time.
As a supervisor i had to overlook the pub while the managers were off work. This meant alot of the time i was handling and solving any problems that arose. It was also my responsibility to close down the pub and cash up the tills. Nonetheless it was also very important to create a friendly environment in the pub; it was part of my job to make the customers feel welcome and comfortable.
I was a runner on 'Later with Jools Holland'. I was having to do the odd jobs around the studios to ensure the whole process was working as smoothly as possible. This ranged from making sure each act on the show had clean towels in the dressing room to standing in for Kanye West at rehearsal (when he was late) to make sure the lighting was correct for his live performance. I was also given the opportunity to be Camera Assistant for one of the evenings, this involved shadowing one of the cameramen and observing his different techniques of filming live music, but also making sure that the transitions between each camera were fluid and smooth.
Similar to my role as a runner when working on 'Later with Jools Holland', however i was able to assist with the editing side when making the cbeebies tv programme, "Mister Maker'. I was shadowing what shots were required in order to have a free-flowing portrayal of how to make certain sculptures/objects.
Film Studies at Southampton Solent University was a course that had a balance of theory and production. In terms of production i had group projects at the end of each semester, ranging from documentaries (see below) to period dramas. The theory side of the course gave me an insight into the social, political and psychological context of film.
