I initially joined SOUNDS - a publication available exclusively on iPads and iPhones – as a freelance contributor in August 2013, where I went on to write features and conduct interviews with artists such as Mike Oldfield and Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters). I've also exercised full creative control of the 'Beatbox'? singles section, and have gained vital experience in transcribing audio and video interviews. I've recently contributed three more cover stories – Joel Compass, Kodaline and Nathan Sykes – interviewed a host of artists (Foy Vance, Conrad Sewell) during large-scale photoshoots in central London, and attended The Great Escape Festival in Brighton to play a major part in the interviews and video shoots with the likes of Aurora, SOAK and Jay Prince, as well as reviewing some of the live shows at the festival. Some of my pieces have also been subsequently published in SOUNDS’ sister publication, Project Week.
After writing two cover stories – on Gary Barlow and VV Brown – I was offered the opportunity to join SOUNDS full-time as Managing Editor. My main responsibilities included managing a team of UK and US-based writers, liaising with professionals from both music PR companies and record labels, and devising major creative input for the magazine. I also made notes on the direction of video content and offered creative guidance on social media strategy. My time with SOUNDS has enabled me to learn a huge amount about the magazine business, as well as enhancing my own personal skills in communication, organisation and sub-editing.
