Education
BA English Language & CommunicationKing's College London
- London, United Kingdom
Throughout my three year degree I gained a thorough understanding of the properties and structures of English and how it is used in different social, institutional and professional settings in both contemporary and historical contexts. I studied and analysed the relationship between language, culture and society and learnt how native languages are acquired and how second languages are learned. I also undertook several linguistic projects in which I collected and analysed data using both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
In my third year particularly my module choices considered how English is used and viewed in multicultural communities and the globalised world. I decided to base my dissertation research on the language and citizenship testing process currently in use for migrants to the United Kingdom. I examined the political history behind the policies and legislation that made English language testing a crucial requirement for people coming to Britain and I interviewed several participants who were newly ordained British citizens who had taken the test to gain an understanding of the process and their views on its effectiveness, which I then analysed within my discussion of the data.
Dissertation title – “Becoming British – an exploration of language and citizenship testing in the United Kingdom”
Third year modules – Language & Media, Language, Culture & Society, Philosophy of Language, Language, People & Boundaries, Language Politics, Language & Social Media
