About me
I'm a multidisciplinary artist and designer, with lots of practical experience creating and assisting on events in an arts and culture capacity. I enjoy collaborative projects and believe this is a hugely beneficial process for my creative practice. My skill set is diverse, and my practice spans working digitally as a designer, curating and running events, to making and working in textiles and ceramic mediums. I create functional art-objects under the name Salmon Studio. You can see more of my work here: https://salmon-studio.tumblr.com/ I'm a keen photographer, and have a good eye for composition and colour. My favourite style of photography is naturalistic, catching people when they are engrossed in an activity. One of my greatest loves is cinema. I've tried my hand at making videos - a selection of which can be seen on my vimeo here: https://vimeo.com/scarden Feel free to reach out and ask me about any of my work, or invite me to be apart of a project!
Projects
  • Illustration
IllustrationI have rediscovered my love for drawing in the past 3 years. My illustration projects are often self-initiated, and I work initially in a hand-rendered style, using paper and pen. I enjoy experimenting with digital processes to animate, enhance and edit these drawings, which I hope gives them a more finished quality whilst retaining their human-ness.
  • Baggage
BaggageMy final year project looked at creating visual representations of emotional baggage, in a fun and uplifting way. The aim of these photos was to find a commonality between people and find solace in the fact that sometimes we all feel unsure of our place in the world. I enjoyed creating these photographs and working in a style that considered studio photography, lighting, digital enhancement, and set design.
  • Travel Photography
Travel PhotographyI've loved travelling since my first solo trip abroad when I was 14 on a french-exchange, and photography has always felt like an important part of those experiences. I'm interested in documenting my surroundings with an alien eye, picking up on the unusual in the mundane. I enjoy the quality of black and white photography, and the magic quality of 35mm. However I mostly shoot on a Canon 600D in colour and edit the photos digitally post trip. I've been lucky enough to visit amazing and exciting
  • Swap Shop
Swap ShopSwap Shop was a community project that focused on local history and recycling outreach. People were invited to bring an old unwanted item of clothing and swap it for something new from the swap shop. Each item donated carried a label with a story from the previous owner - connecting people to the items’ past history. The project ran for a week and was supported with space in kind from Bristol City Council.
  • Home Made Film Festival
Home Made Film FestivalHome Made Film Festival ran from January until November 2015 in Bristol. Our aim for the events was to showcase the work of fledgling filmmakers and create an evening that celebrated home-made movie-making and the communal cinema experience. As one of a collective of three, I created the branding for our first Home Made Film Festival which was featured as part of our animation, social media and in printed matter. For the full animation go to: https://vimeo.com/257045680
  • Colectivo
ColectivoColectivo is an independent publication co-created in response to a 6-week long cultural exchange in Havana, Cuba with fellow creative Laura Plant. It features original photography, writing, Illustration and found ephemera from our time there. The typography and layouts are based on vintage books found in our homestay. The final publication comprised of 3 sections, the first and the third were risograph printed and the middle section was digitally printed.
